A loan of $575 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Makunda Shg Group's story

Martin is the facilitator of the group Makunda SHG. His group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Martin takes care of eight children at home. He joined One Acre Fund for One Acre Fund’s best prices and to access fertilizers and hybrid seeds. In the recent 2011 season, Martin had an excellent maize yield harvesting 18 bags on one acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Martin was only able to harvest eight bags of maize on one acre of land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Martin and his group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

With income from his maize sales, Martin will repay his loans and invest in livestock rearing.

In 2012, the members of Makunda SHG group will each plant maize plots between ½ and 1 acre of land.
