Heliconias Group's story

The “Heliconias” (wild flowers) group has 10 members who live in a community noted for its residents who are very humble and hardworking; the main economic activity is growing oranges and coffee.

Lidia is one of the group members. She’s 31 years old and finished second semester of high school. She’s married to Plutarco who works as a day laborer in the fields and she has a little girl.

Lidia is a very hardworking woman who relates that she rented a small locale 11 years ago and started selling vegetables. Little by little and with much effort she also started to sell a bit of clothes, cookies and gifts.

She relates that the business has grown based on effort and dedication she’s put into it. She also tells us that she goes out to other communities to sell her wares in a pick-up truck and she sells quite a bit. She said: “There will always be work and I have more than enough desire to get ahead.”

She will use the loan to buy flowers, bread, cookies, clothes (t-shirts, shorts, shirts and dresses), fruit, vegetables and soft-drinks. She hopes that with this investment her business will prosper so that she can give her daughter a better quality of life and in future she can attend university.
