A loan of $575 helped a member to buy farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Tatua Shida Shg Group's story

Fred is the facilitator of the Tatua Shida SHG group. Fred and his group joined One Acre Fund in 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Fred takes care of six children at home. He joined One Acre Fund to get One Acre Fund's low prices, to ensure food security for his family, and, later, to educate them. In the recent 2011 season, Fred had an excellent maize yield harvesting six bags on half an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Fred was only able to harvest one bag of maize on that land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Fred and his group during Kenya's next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs such as fertilizer and seed is part of One Acre Fund's integrated agriculture package, which also includes training, credit, and insurance.

With the income from maize sales, Fred will educate his children and invest in livestock rearing.

In 2012, the members of Tatua Shida SHG group will each plant maize plots between one half and one acre of land.
