A loan of $475 helped a member to buy farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Bituti Group's story

Gladys is the facilitator of the Bituti group. Gladys and her group joined One Acre Fund in 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Gladys takes care of seven children at home. She joined One Acre Fund due to One Acre Fund's low prices, to ensure food security for her family, and, later, to educate them. In the recent 2011 season, Gladys had a good maize yield harvesting 12 bags on half an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Gladys was only able to harvest three and half bags of maize on that land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Gladys and her group during Kenya's next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund's integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit, and insurance.

With income from maize sales, Gladys will educate her children, build a house, and invest in livestock rearing.

In 2012, the members of Bituti group will each plant maize plots between ½ and one acre of land.

In the photograph above, Gladys is pictured with her group members.
