A loan of $300 helped to buy fertilizer, seeds, and other supplies for potatoes, and also to buy pigs to raise.

Julia Del Socorro's story

Miraflor is one of the municipalities of the department of Estelí most visited by tourists because of its fertile land, its rich flora and fauna, and its inhabitants and communities engaged in a variety of farming activities.

Julia lives there, in the community of Terrero. She is 27 years old, married, and the mother of two children aged 11 and 10. She completed grade 5 of primary school. She now earns her living by growing vegetables.

She started this job at the age of 17 with a loan as she didn’t have enough capital. She grew onions and tomatoes. Then she learned how to raise pigs and sell them. As time passed she got more experience, and now grows and sells potatoes too in the town of Estelí. She works alongside her husband growing and selling the produce.

Now Julia needs a loan to buy fertilizer, seeds, and other supplies for the potatoes, and also to buy pigs to raise. With the money she will be able to afford some of these necessities that she lacks and will be able to get a good crop of potatoes.

Julia says that one of her objectives is to provide her children with a house where they can live with dignity so they don’t have to move around from one place to another. She also wants them to be educated so they are someone when they grow up. Her future plans also include the wish to improve the pen where the pigs live so that they have better conditions.
