Frida is aged 34 and married with five children. The first four are already in school. She has been in farming for the last four years and currently employs one farmhand who helps her produce milk, maize, beans and vegetables in her home area of Kitale, Western Kenya. She is also in a motorcycle transport business.
Frida has requested for a loan of 100,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to enable her to construct a greenhouse where she will grow tomatoes for commercial purposes. She adds the greenhouse will make her production possible in all seasons and benefit her especially during the dry season when the supply is poor in the market.
She is grateful for Juhudi Kilimo's support and reiterates that the loans will economically empower smallholder farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
