A loan of $1,750 helped a member to buy galvanized corrugated iron and doors for the completion of a family house he has begun.

Mathew's Group's story

Pictured here are teachers from one of the secondary schools in Kenema, a city in eastern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for a loan of 7,500,000 SLL in order to meet immediate financial challenges. At the end of each month, they will repay the loan using their monthly salaries. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for making the repayments.

Mathew is the leader of this group of teachers. Born in Kenema, the fifty-nine-year-old is married and has eight children. One is in primary school and seven are in secondary school. Mathew has been a professional teacher for the past 30 years now. With his share of this loan, he is going to buy galvanized corrugated iron and doors for the completion of a family house he has begun.
