A loan of $575 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Weya Shg Group's story

Greetings from Weya SHG Group in Western Kenya! Esther is the facilitator of the Weya SHG group. This group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Esther takes care of eight children at home. She joined One Acre Fund in order to have quality farm produce and ensure food security for her family. In the recent 2011 season, Esther had a good maize yield harvesting 16 bags on one acre of land. Before joining One Ace Fund, Esther was only able to harvest seven bags of maize on one acre of land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Esther and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

With income from her maize sales, Esther will educate her children and invest in raising livestock.

In the above photograph, Esther is pictured with her group members.
