A loan of $1,100 helped to buy cosmetics and clothes.

María Monserrate's story

The “Constructoras Del Éxito” (Success Builders) communal bank meets every two weeks in the city of Portoviejo known for many years as “Ciudad Del Valle” (City of the Valley) because the city is surrounded by many hills.

We met María, 21, here. She’s single and studying fifth semester of Business Administration at a university in Manabí. She lives with her parents and has been in the communal bank for six cycles; she likes it because of the ease in getting loans.

She is a lovely young lady who besides being dedicated to her studies is also a merchant; she sells clothes via catalogue and Avon brand products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfume and women’s accessories). She works every day because she sells both at home and also at the university she attends. She sells on credit and collects weekly. She’s been in business four years and this is how she helps to pay her school costs.

This loan is to buy perfume, cream, cosmetics and clothes. Her dream is to finish her schooling and become a great businesswoman.
