A loan of $1,100 helped to buy 3 young oxen.

José Lorenzo's story

Señor José is 50 years old and lives with his son.

From the age of 10 José has been a farmer as his father taught him how to plant corn and millet. From the age of 12 he has also taken care of livestock as he used to help a friend and so learned how to work with oxen. As his family was very poor, José started work from an early age. He gets up at 5:00 in the morning to go to work. He walks for 25 minutes to get to work where he works for 8 hours every day. His dream is to have something when he can no longer work.

José travels to buy the supplies he needs. He travels 10 minutes by minibus and sometimes he uses his oxen on the road to get there to save a few dollars.

He is asking for a loan to buy 3 young oxen for work. As he had to sell the ones he had at sowing time, he wants to buy others for the harvest. In this way, he will not need to pay someone else to harvest his crop as having his own young oxen he will do it himself and save himself the money. He will also be able to haul crops for other people and give his family a better standard of living. José wants to save as much as possible to provide for his family when he is gone; and leave his son a good yoke of oxen so that he can work and make an honest living.
