A loan of $1,100 helped a member to pay school fees for his children.

Peter Morlai's Group's story

Pictured above are teachers of a primary school in Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. This school, established in 1978, is staffed with six teachers and has about 200 pupils. The staff of this institution, like many other schools’ staff within SMT’s operational areas, comes to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish certain tasks that they would otherwise be unable to accomplish with their mere salaries. Some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy furniture, land or house-building materials; others invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf. Fifty-six-year-old Peter is the leader of this group of teachers. He was born in Makeni. Peter is married and has four children who are attending primary and secondary schools. Peter has served in the teaching profession for 34 years now. He has requested this loan in order to pay school fees for his children.
