A loan of $925 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Changara Kumbukumbu Group's story

Receive greetings from Changara Kumbukumbu Group in Western Kenya! Tom is the facilitator of the group. This group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Tom takes care of four children at home. He joined One Acre Fund in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and ensure food security for his family. In the recent 2011 season, Tom had a good maize yield harvesting 6 bags on 1/2 an acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Tom was only able to harvest 2 bags of maize on 1/2 an acre of land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Tom and his group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

With income from maize sales, Tom will educate his children and ensure food security for his family.

In 2012, the members of Changara Kumbukumbu group will each plant between ½ and 1 acre of maize.

Tom is pictured in the photograph with his group members.
