A loan of $575 helped a member to buy farming inputs such as seeds and fertilizer at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Sosio Group's story

Greetings from the Sosio Group in Western Kenya! Gilbert is the facilitator of the Sosio group. This group joined One Acre Fund in 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Gilbert takes care of eight children at home. He joined One Acre Fund in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and ensure food security for his family. In the recent 2011 season, Gilbert had an excellent maize yield harvesting 15 bags on one acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Gilbert was only able to harvest five bags of maize on that land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Gilbert and his group during Kenya's next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund's integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input (such as fertilizer and seed) supply, credit, and insurance.

With income from maize sales, Gilbert will educate his children, ensure food security for his family, and invest in livestock rearing.

In 2012, the members of Sosio group will each plant between ½ and one acre of maize.
