A loan of $675 helped a member to source farming inputs such as seeds and fertilizer at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Majengo Group's story

Receive greetings from Majengo Group in Western Kenya! Beatrice is the facilitator of the Majengo group. This group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

Beatrice takes care of six children at home. She joined One Acre Fund in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and ensure food security for her family. In the recent 2011 season, Beatrice had a very good maize yield harvesting 15 bags on 1 acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, Beatrice was only able to harvest 6 bags of maize on 1 acre of land.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Beatrice and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

With income from maize sales, Beatrice will educate her children, ensure food security and invest in livestock rearing.

In 2012, the members of Majengo group will each plant between ½ and 1 acre of maize.

Beatrice is pictured with her group members in the photograph.
