A loan of $900 helped to buy pants, blouses, tee shirts and Avon cosmetics.

Melba Ernestina's story

The village bank "20 de Abril" meets every 15 days in the canton of Montecristi (Portoviejo), known for its rich precolonial culture and craftsmanship that is recognized nationally and around the world. It is famous for Panama hats made of palm fiber.

Here we meet Melba, 55, separated, and a mother of one grown daughter who still lives with her.

In order to earn a living, and make sure that her daughter didn't lack for anything, she took what few resources she had and started a business 8 years ago selling clothing. She still has the same business today, and is now also selling Avon products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfume and ladies' accessories). This has helped her to sustain herself honorably. She sells her products door-to-door, working 3 days a week. She leaves items on credit and collects payment on the weekend.

This loan will help her to buy more merchandise like: pants, blouses, shirts and Avon cosmetics. She has been with the village bank since the beginning, is the president of the group and likes it because the group is excellent.

Her dreams are to continue moving forward with her business and to enjoy good health.
