A loan of $3,800 helped a member to buy guinea pigs.

La Estancia (Cuenca) Group's story

The members of the La Estancia communal bank, nine women and one man, are agreeable, gentle, and warm-hearted people. They work in different jobs, especially agricultural work. Since they work in various activities, they are able to contribute to the household economy and get ahead with their families. They live in the environs of Paute canton (Cuenca), a canton known for its beautiful landscape, several places to visit, warm climate, variety in its typical cuisine, and people who maintain the culture and traditions of their communities.

One of the members of this group is Janeth, 27. She lives with her common-law husband and has conceived two children, ages 6 and 4, who study in a school in the community. Her husband works as a private employee, and the house in which she lives is her own property.

Janeth does whatever job she is given, since there are days when she works in agriculture, plucking chickens or any other job. At home she works raising and selling guinea pigs and chickens.

She has been a member of the communal bank for five years, and with her new loan she will buy guinea pigs to expand her breeding.

Her goal is to have a larger guinea pig shed.
