A loan of $1,000 helped to buy food, soda, juice, energy drinks, etc.

Gioconda Maribel's story

Every two weeks, the members of the 'Damas al Poder' community bank meet in the city of Portoviejo, the capital of Manabí, which has been known for many years as the 'City of the Royal Tamarind Trees'.

Here we meet Gioconda who is 46 years old, divorced, and has four children. Three of her children are already grown up and her youngest is 16 and still in school. Two of her children still live with her.

With the aim of making her own money and using it to get provide for her children, Gioconda set up a bar in her house several years ago. In it she sells sandwiches and drinks such as soda, juice, energy drinks, etc. She works from Thursday to Sunday, from 3.00pm to 10.00pm, and her children help her in the business. Through this business, she has been able to provide for her children on her own.

Gioconda will use this loan to buy food products with which to prepare her sandwiches. She will also buy soda, juice, energy drinks and other products. She has been a member of her community bank for two years and she likes it because of the help that they have given her and because the interest rates are lower than those offered elsewhere.

Gioconda's goals are to continue making progress.
