A loan of $375 helped to buy foam, thread, straps and other materials to increase production.

Cándido Rafael's story

Cándido works making and selling pillows wholesale and retail. He is a married man and has 6 children aged 2 to 22. He dreams of seeing them become successful and this is what drives him every day at his job. He started this business with his wife in 1989 with just one household sewing machine. Gradually he bought two more with his own resources and some loans. His two daughters also work in the manufacturing process. His work schedule is Monday through Friday in production and weekends he does the comercial activity, because he sells door to door. His market is located in the city of Barranquilla and in the city of Soledad, but he also travels to different towns in the department of Atlántico, where his pillows are well known. He charges upfront but every day his demand goes up and he needs more working capital to respond and offer competitive prices in more volume. At present, he is using his first Kiva loan to buy foam, thread, and other materials to increase production.
