A loan of $700 helped a member to pay school fees for her children and invest the rest of the loan in a business.

Isata's Group's story

In the photo are teachers in one of the schools in Koidu city, in eastern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT/Kiva lenders to seek a loan. Like their counterparts in other regions of the country, they have requested this loan for varied reasons – some to pay school fees for their children, buy house-building materials, invest in business, etc. At the end of each month, they repay SMT/Kiva lenders, using their monthly salaries. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and repaying SMT/Kiva lenders. Isatu is the leader of this group of teachers. The 42-year-old was born in a place called Koayima, in eastern Sierra Leone. She is a widow with 6 children – 1 in primary school and 5 in secondary school. Isatu has been a professional teacher for 10 years. She has requested this loan to pay school fees for her children and to invest the rest of the loan in a business.
