Groundnut Group's story

In the photo are members of the “Groundnut” group. They are small scale businesswomen based in Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. They are seeking a loan of 3,600,000 SLL from SMT/Kiva lenders. With this loan, they will be able to expand their businesses, make more profit and consequently improve their standard of living.

The leader of this group is Salamatu, 36. She was born in the town of Kamakwe in northern Sierra Leone. She is married to a soldier and the couple has four children: three in primary school and one in secondary school. Salamatu is a petty businesswoman who has been selling groundnuts for the past eight years. With her share of this loan, she is going to buy bags of groundnuts to add to her business.
