A loan of $1,475 helped a member to buy food condiments.

Benkan Group's story

Benkan Group is made up of seven women living in the city of San. They are all married and, on average, are 42 years old and have four children. They buy and sell food condiments and various other articles. Eager to satisfy their ever increasing clientele, the group members decided to join the credit program of the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso. After having repaid four loans on schedule, the group is now in its fifth loan cycle. Assan, standing at the right-hand side of the photo and wearing her child on her back, intends to use her loan to buy supplies from wholesalers in San. She will buy 20 boxes of Jumbo bouillon cubes, 2 sacks of cooking salt, 10 boxes of tomato purée, 50 kilograms of onions and 1 sack of garlic. She retails her goods out of her home, for cash or credit, to a clientele usually made up of women. Assan expects to make an average profit of 32,000 CFA francs per month, which she will use to pay off her loan and help her husband. The other women in the group expect to earn on average 29,500 CFA francs per month. The women of Benkan Group wish to become wholesalers in future. Note: Maïmouna was absent because a relative of hers had died.
