It is rare in Uganda for one to doubt a 48-year-old midwife with 17 years of experience. Mayi K., the chairperson of the Twekembe Development Group, can be best described as such. She is married with 4 children and provides for 6 of her relatives. She has a maternity home in Bulenga and she has been our client for 8 years. Her dream for the future is to have her own premises for the maternity home, which is currently in rented space. She believes her dream can only come true by having a loan together with her group. Mayi is result-oriented and hardworking.

This is a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
