A loan of $900 helped to buy products for her bazaar and flowers to sell.

Nancy María's story

The Communal Bank “Plazoleta Eloy Alfaro” meets every 15 days in the September 30th neighborhood of the canton of Rocafuerte (Portoviejo). This place is known for its delicious sweets that are prepared by the locals and known throughout the entire country.

It is in this place that one can meet Sra. Nancy. She is 43 years old, married, and has two children (ages 18 and 14) who are studying at the university and a high school respectively. Her husband is a farmer.

Nancy is able to earn some income through her own means by working in the retail trade. She has a bazaar in the central part of Rocafuerte. In addition to the products in her bazaar, she also sells flowers and natural flower arrangements. Nancy works every day from 8:30am to 6pm. She works alone but sometimes she needs help and must hire another person. Nancy has been in business for 13 years and has done well.

This loan will be invested in products for her bazaar, but mostly flowers to be delivered on the day of the departed saints. In general, she sells many flowers on these days. Nancy is a founding member of the Communal Bank, where she serves as president. She likes the unity of her group because it feels like a family.

Her dreams are to have her own shop since she currently rents her location and to finish the renovation of her house.
