A loan of $775 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Matore Women Group's story

Greetings from Matore Women Group in Western Kenya! This group joined Kiva partner One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.
Beatrice is the facilitator of the group. She has eight children at home to take care of. She joined One Acre Fund in order to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds, ensure food security for her family and educate her children. In the recent 2011 season, Beatrice had an excellent maize yield harvesting 22 bags on 1 acre of land. Before joining One Acre Fund, she was only able to harvest 5 bags of maize on 1 acre of land.
With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Beatrice and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.
With income from maize sales, Beatrice will educate her children, ensure food security and pay her loan.
In 2012, the members of Matore Women Group will each plant between half and 1 acre of maize.
Beatrice is pictured with her group members in the photograph.
