Betty S.'s Group's story

Pictured above is a group of teachers from one of the primary schools in Kenema, a city in eastern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, to seek a loan of 7,400,000 SLL. With the help of this loan, they will be able to buy items or invest in projects that their salaries alone cannot afford. At the end of each month, using their monthly salaries, these teachers repay the loan. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for making the repayment on their behalf.

The leader of this group of teachers is Betty. A native of Damawulo, the 57-year-old has been in the teaching profession for 36 years now. Betty is married and has 4 children – 2 in primary school and 2 in secondary school. Betty has requested this loan in order to pay school fees for her children.
