Karla Vanessa's story

Karla’s a 27-year-old mother of three children. She’s not married and lives in Río Verde Parish in Santo Domingo Canton. Santo Domingo is a canton belonging to Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province which is one of Ecuador’s most densely populated. It’s very attractive because it has several monuments scattered throughout the city. Among them is the “Monumento al Indio Colorado” [Monument to the Red Indian], a sector known as “Y del Colorado.” Santo Domingo is a canton that’s blessed with marvelous, hardworking and enterprising people that strive untiringly to develop and make progress; they receive tourists with open arms and show them the marvels of their culture and surroundings.

For the last five years she’s been working independently making clothes, a skill she learned at her previous employment. She employs two women that help her sew. She works all day and sometimes the work day extends well into the night. She wants to buy fabric and a sewing machine to expand her business.

Life has not been easy but she wants to keep up the pace of her work to continue supporting her home economically. Her dream is to have a house of her own and that’s why she works so hard every day.
