A loan of $550 helped to buy fifty 'arrobas' of oats, detergents, etc.

Marlene's story

Marlene is a member of the “La Yunguyeñita” community bank which is located in Yunguyo district and province, in Puno department. She is 34 years old, married, and has two school-age children. She did not complete her secondary education.

Marlene has been working with Movimiento Manuela Ramos for four years. Her first loan was for 300 soles and she invested that money in her business selling groceries, cereals, detergents, toothpaste, candies, etc.

With this new loan for 1,500 soles, Marlene will buy fifty 'arrobas' of oats (1 arroba = approx. 25lbs), detergents and other products to sell in the town of Moquegua. She works alone in her business. Her husband is a truck driver.

Marlene would like to make improvements to her home and buy more land to leave to her children.

What Marlene likes about her community bank are the meetings and what she makes on her savings.
