A loan of $525 helped a member to buy more shoes.

Yuniya's Group's story

Yuniya's group is comprised of 5 hard-working women. Yuniya is 21 years old and lives in the town of Nateete in the Kampala North region of Uganda. She is married and has two children who are both currently in school. For the past three years, Yuniya has been working hard to help her mother manage a small shop which sells shoes and other footwear.

To help expand her business, Yuniya has requested a loan of 400,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more shoes and will help Yuniya to generate greater profits and pay school fees. Yuniya hopes that in the future she will be able to open her own retail business.

Yuniya is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training. The ELA program has increased Yuniya's future prospects by helping her to learn more about running a business.
