A loan of $350 helped a member to source farming inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, at low prices for the 2012 planting season.

Namukhe Shg Group's story

Alice is the facilitator of the Namukhe SHG group. Alice and her group joined One Acre Fund in the year 2011 and will re-enroll in the 2012 program.

With this loan, One Acre Fund will purchase fertilizer, seeds, and other important inputs to distribute to Alice and her group during Kenya’s next planting season in February 2012. The distribution of farming inputs is part of One Acre Fund’s integrated agriculture package, which includes training, reliable input supply (such as fertilizer and seeds), credit and insurance.

Alice takes care of six children at home. She joined One Acre Fund in order to be able to access fertilizer and hybrid seeds and was particularly pleased with the terms of the loan repayment, which begins early and is gradual. In the recent 2011 season, Alice had an excellent maize yield harvesting 8 bags on ½ acre of land. Before joining One Ace Fund, Alice was only able to harvest 5 bags of maize on 2 acres of land.

With income from the maize sales, Alice will educate her children and invest in livestock, which will help her repay her loan.

In 2012, the members of Namukhe SHG group will each plant maize on plots between ½ and 1 acre of land.
