A loan of $400 helped to buy molasses and manure as well as pay for labour etc.

Deysiz Cristina's story

Deysiz Cristina is a small scale producer of coffee. She is married and has 3 daughters and 2 sons. She lives with them in Las Minas Lepaguare.

Deysiz started her business life as a street vendor selling used clothing around her neighbourhood and the surrounding area. Her husband used to grow coffee but because of economic difficulties he decided to pursue the American dream and immigrated to the United States. After sending her remittances for several months, Deysiz was able to buy a small coffee farm and although initially not knowing much about running the business, she hired a manager and 'gracias a Dios' ('thanks be to God') is doing very well. At harvest time Deysiz gets up at 3:00 am to make breakfast for the workers who harvest the crop and during the day she helps with a few of the tasks and also supervises.

The loan Deysiz is asking for is needed to buy 10 quintals (1000 lbs) of molasses, manure and also to pay for the labour used for cleaning the farmland. With the support of the loan her production will be of a better quality and she will be able to negotiate a better price with the buyers.

Her dream is to expand her farm and make it one of the best in the region so as to give her children a better quality of life and continue supporting them with their academic studies. Deysiz has 3 loan cycles with FAMA and made the repayments on her loans on time.
