Hellen is a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya. She is aged 27 and has been involved in mixed farming for 5 years, producing vegetables, eggs and timber for the local market. She is married and has 4 children, all in schooling.
Hellen has made a third loan request, with Juhudi Kilimo, for a loan of 100,000 KES. With the loan, she will purchase a power saw for her lumbering business and poultry birds to boost her poultry farming business. She says she will also use the income to buy dairy a cow for her dairy farming business too. She adds that previous loans have uplifted her living standards and she believes the third loan will make it much better.
She notes that the high cost of feed is a challenge in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
