A loan of $725 helped to buy fish.

Julia Monserrate's story

The “24 de Diciembre” communal bank meets every two weeks in Montecristi Canton known for its rich pre-colonial culture and for its crafts that are known both nationally and internationally; it’s the place where the famous straw hats come from. Julia, 49, is a founding member of the bank and she likes the help she’s gotten during the time she’s been in the communal bank. She’s married and has two children who are adults now but one of them still lives with her. Her husband’s a bricklayer. Our friend is a fish merchant. She leaves home every day and goes up to the fishing boats that arrive from the high seas. When the fish is unloaded she buys it from the fishermen by the lockerful to then go sell it throughout her community. She works every day from 5am until 3pm. She’s been in this business for over 12 years and she’s done very well. This loan is to buy fish to resell. Her dream is for herself and her loved ones to be in good health.
