A loan of $175 helped a member to buy more medicine.

Safiya's Group's story

Safiya's group is comprised of hard working women. Safiya is 18 years old and lives in the town of Kayunga in the Mukono region of Uganda. For the past 2 years Safiya has been working hard to manage her clinic which offers health services.

To help expand her business, Safiya has requested a loan of 200,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more medicine and will help Safiya to generate greater profits and buy new clothes for herself. Safiya hopes that in the future she will be able to become a nurse.

Safiya is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training. The ELA program has increased Safiya's future prospects by helping her to read educational story books.
