Zenaida Yessenia's story

The Mujeres de Lucha [Women of Struggle] Communal Bank meets twice a month in the parish of Picoaza in the city of Portoviejo. This place is known for being a commercial zone and for its traditional Saint Peter and Saint John festivals and for the happiness of its people.

In this place we meet Zenaida who is 37 years old, married, with 3 children who are 20, 15, and 11 years old who are studying at university and attending schools. They all live with her. Her husband is a businessman.

She is a great housewife and to earn her own income she sells all types of clothing and plastic articles. She sells from door-to-door working 3 days a week, mostly in the mornings because her children are in school, it’s cooler, and she can make better time. People buy on credit and pay her on the weekends. She began this business more than 15 years ago and she always has done well and she has many clients.

This loan is to buy pants, shirts, blouses, children’s clothing and plastic products. She is a founding member of the communal bank, in its 43rd cycle, and she likes the opportunity that it gives her to borrow money. She dreams of a better future and of having the own store.
