Santiago De Gualaceo (Cuenca) Group's story

The community bank Santiago de Gualaceo is comprised of 8 women and one man who are friends and neighbors. They are very charismatic and kind people who keep up the traditions and culture of their parents. The work in different trades that enable them to pay their household expenses. They live in the canton of Gualaceo, which is a place with a temperate climate and architecture which is a mix of the modern and the ancient. The people there work creating crafts or in general commerce and the cuisine is very varied. One of the members of this group is María Betty. She lives in the canton of Gualaceo and works selling food. This member or the bank is 51 years old, married, and has 2 children of 30 and 20 years of age who are married and independent. Her husband works in agriculture. They don't have their own house so they rent a place in town. María Betty begins her work at 3 in the morning when she gets up to prepare her products. She starts selling at 6 in the morning and finishes at 2 in the afternoon. Later she clears up the utensils and gets ready a little for the following day. She has been running this business for 6 months and works from Monday to Friday. At the weekends, she works as a cook in a restaurant. This is her first loan and she will use it to buy groceries so she can continue with her business. Her goal is to grow her business.
