Mariam's Group's story

Mariam’s group is comprised of four hard-working women. Mariam is 21 years old and lives in the town of Kalerwe in the Kampala east region of Uganda. She is married and has three children. All of her children are currently in school. Mariam has a small retail shop business, which she has had for seven years. To help expand her business, Mariam has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase essential commodities like sugar and soap for resale. With the help of the loan from BRAC, Mariam hopes to generate greater profits and buy new clothes for herself. In the future, Mariam hopes to own a plot of land. Mariam is a member of BRAC’s Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program, which has helped her prospects for the future by improving her standard of living.
