A loan of $1,100 helped buy 3 bags of green pea seeds and sacks of fertilizer for her farm fields.

Mercedes's story

Mercedes, 36 years old, is a very simple and hard-working woman who lives in her own house with her husband Hector and her little daughter Resali, whom she cares for and educates at home in the settlement of Patay.

At the age of 15, Mercedes became a very responsible and hard-working mother. Carrying her daughter on her back, she worked her nieghbor's land with her husband, and together they earned just 20 sols a day.

Eventually, they decided to rent farm plots and plant their own crops. They began by sowing potatoes and their harvests have been very good, permitting them to accumulate money. This led them to acquire some cultivable lands. Since then, each year Mercedes sows potatoes and green peas, resulting in good earnings. With these, they bought two bulls to plough the land and 2 burros for carrying loads.

Mercedes and her husband are very content and happy now, since they like to work in agriculture and earn money for each harvest. They are convinced they can continue making money from their crops, and in this way, save to acquire more land and avoid having to rent farmland.

Mercedes belongs to the “Santa Cruz de Patay” communal bank and this is her 9th loan through MFP. She promises to comply with her payment schedule, and hopes to begin saving in her communal bank. Upon receiving the loan, Mercedes will buy 3 bags of green pea seeds and various sacks of natural fertilizer for the next sowing.
