A loan of $375 helped to buy a cow.

Gladys's story

Gladys is a member of the “Las Estrellitas Unidas del Titicaca” community bank which is located in Pilcuyo district, in El Collao province, in Puno department. She is 31 years old, married, and has three children in her care. She completed high school.

Gladys has been working with Movimiento Manuela Ramos for 12 loan cycles. Her first loan was for 300 Peruvian soles and she invested that money in her business buying and selling livestock such as sheep and cows. She bought three sheep.

With this new loan for 1,000 soles, Gladys will buy a cow which she will sell immediately. Sometimes she fattens the animals for four months and thereby obtains a better price. She tells us that she buys and sells her animals in Pilcuyo. Gladys works alone in her business. Her husband works as a truck driver outside the city.

Gladys' dream is to have more capital available so that she can open a restaurant and thereby improve her income. What she likes about the community bank are the savings and the interest.
