A loan of $600 helped to purchase materials and accessories for sewing as well as products that have been ordered by her customers.

Elizabeth Maria's story

Elizabeth is 55 years old and lives with her husband and 14-year-old son, who serve as her primary motivation in life. Twenty years ago, she arrived in Cartagena de Indias from the city of Amurallada in search of a better future. Elizabeth wanted so much to study in order to become a professional, but she had difficulty gaining admission into the university. Her friends recommended that she learn how to sew and now she says that she is happy that she made that decision. Elizabeth has excelled because the experience she has gained as an independent entrepreneur allows her to generate her own income for covering the household expenses. At the moment, Elizabeth also sells a variety of merchandise through specialized catalogs. For this reason, she is applying for a Kiva loan.

This is her first form of financing through Fundación Mario Santo Domingo. Elizabeth will buy raw materials, such as fabrics and accessories, as well as products that have been ordered by her customers. The month of love and friendship (the Colombian equivalent to Valentine’s Day) is approaching and will bring an increase in her sales. Her goal is to acquire more capital and secure more places to display her products so that her business, “Confecciones María José”, can grow. This will be her greatest challenge.
