A loan of $2,925 helped a member to pay college fees for her children.

Fatmata H.'s Group's story

Pictured above are teachers at a primary school in Makeni, a city in northern Sierra Leone. They have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org to seek a loan of 12,700,000 SLL in order to meet their immediate financial challenges. At the end of each month, these teachers will repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment from their salaries and repays SMT/Kiva on their behalf. Fatmata is the leader of this group of teachers. Born in Kambia town, the 55 year old woman is married and has 3 children – 2 in college and the other is no longer attending school. Fatmata, who has served in the teaching profession for 37 years now is going to use her share of the loan to pay college fees for her children.
