Renee does not mind being one of the few young women in a very aggressive line of business – construction. In 2005 she started a construction company named Dorsey Bryant Gen Contractors, LLC with jobs ranging from installations to total home renovations, and also including major commercial projects.
Although it has been a challenge for Renee to overcome the fact that she is young, and female, which is sometimes frowned upon in her line of work, she has not been discouraged. Renee has recently secured her first major commercial contract for the City of New Orleans, an impressive feat for most small businesses. The Kiva funds will allow Renee to have the working capital she needs to truly claim her place as one of the best contractors in New Orleans.
About ASI Federal Credit Union
ASI Federal Credit Union has been experiencing an increased rate of defaults. This is possibly related to the experimental nature of the loan products the organization provides. In order to serve asset-poor communities in New Orleans -- including many still recovering from Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill -- ASI offers loan products designed to help people start and grow businesses even if they don't have extensive collateral, credit histories, or business experience. For these reasons, these loans also carry a higher level of risk than typical loans on Kiva.
