A loan of $550 helped buy a cow.

María Mercedes's story

Maria is a member of the Vegaspamba Community Bank. She lives in the community of the same name. Visitors to Vegaspamba will notice its natural beauty, as well as its its charismatic, happy, hard-working residents who do their best to preserve local culture. Many Vegaspamba residents are farmers or craftsmen who produce rope, etc.

Maria is 50 years old and a single mother of seven. One of her daughters is married and living independently. Four others work and contribute to their mother's household. The two youngest, age 16 and 14, are still in school. This family lives in a house that has been passed down through their family.

Maria spends a lot of time on housework, but also raises pigs and chickens. She also makes rope, a craft she learned many years ago from her mother.

She has been a member of her community bank for two years now. With this new loan, she plans to buy a cow to raise, which should help her continue raising her family.
