A loan of $900 helped to purchase perfumes, creams, cosmetics and costume jewellery.

Karen Juliana's story

The Bienestar y Progreso ["Well-Being and Progress"] Communal Bank meets every fifteen days in Colorado, in the Montecristi canton. This region is known nationally and internationally for its rich pre-colonial culture and artistry. This is the home of the famous straw hats.

Here we meet Karen. She is 22, single, and lives in her parents' home. She is in her eighth semester of journalism at the Universidad Laica de Manta.

On top of her studies, our friend is a merchant. She sells Yanbal, Avon and Sayson products (beauty products, perfume and women's accessories). She works every day, since on top of selling in her neighbourhood, she also sells at the university to her classmates and acquaintances. She leaves her products on credit and charges every fifteen days. She has done this work for three years and it is going very well for her. Her biggest sellers are the creams, because they are very good.

This loan is for purchasing perfumes, creams, cosmetics and costume jewellery. She has been a member of the communal bank for two years and she likes it because the loans are fast.

Her dreams are to complete her studies and have a good job.
