Esther is a farmer, aged 35, and married with 4 children aged 5-12. She has been in mixed farming for 12 years in her hometown of Kitale, Western Kenya. Her farm produces vegetables, tomatoes, and fruits.
Esther has requested a loan of 61,200 Kenyan shillings (KES) from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to purchase and insure a dairy cow for 31,200 KES and to buy poultry birds for 30,000 KES. Esther says her poultry business has picked up well and will do much better with more birds. She adds that her first Juhudi loan helped her start the poultry business and that the second one will improve her family's living standard.
Esther says fluctuations in prices and animal diseases are the greatest challenges in the farming business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
