A loan of $3,975 helped a member to buy fruit and vegetables.

Caritas Alegres (Cuenca) Group's story

The “Caritas Alegres” (Cheerful Little Faces) communal bank has 11 members who are friends and have known each other for many years. They work in different activities in one of the city’s markets. These activities have made it possible for them to improve economically. They live in different parts of the city of Cuenca. This city has a beautiful colonial structure, a varied cuisine; its residents are kind and cordial and maintain their culture and traditions.

One of the group members is María Adelina. She lives in Turi Parish and is 59 years old. She’s separated and has five children who are all adults now, married and independent. She owns the house she lives in.

She sells fruit and vegetables, an activity she’s been carrying out for 27 years. She has a stand of her own and she works from Sunday to Sunday with no set work schedule. At home, she raises chickens and guinea pigs and also farms. She sells the vegetables she grows in her stand in the market.

She is rejoining the communal bank and will use her new loan to buy fruit and vegetables to have a better variety available for her demanding clientele. Her goal is to continue growing in her business.
