A loan of $775 helped to purchase poultry and feed.

Shirley Yaqueline's story

In the Parish of Ayacucho of the canton of Santa Ana the communal bank San Bartolo meets every two weeks. This place is known for its beautiful fresh water pools which are a great tourist attraction in the canton as well as the province.

Here we meet Shirley. She is 37 years of age and she is married common-law. She has five children, aged 18, 17, 12, 11, and 9 years old. The three youngest of her children are in high school and primary school. Her husband is an agriculturist.

Some time ago she built a small poultry farm in order to generate an income and to help her husband with the household expenses. She raises poultry because she has adequate space to do so and because she can also manage her business without having to neglect her home and her children. She buys the poultry when they are chicks and she keeps them for three months before she sells them to the merchants who visit her house. She also sells meat by the pound to the people in her community.

This loan will be used to purchase poultry and feed. She has been a member of her communal bank since its inception and she is the treasurer. She appreciates it because the group is very unified and orderly.

Her dream is for her children to have a good education.
