A loan of $175 helped purchase material, thread, and groundnut.

Mary's story

Mary is married and God has blessed her marriage with two lovely children, one of whom is below the age of fifteen. She lives with her family in a one-bedroom house in Rendez-vous, a quarter in Bamenda, of the Northwest region of Cameroon.

The major challenge she has faced in life has been poverty, including insufficient money to treat herself when she was sick and difficulty in paying her house rent. She has a leg injury and hates thinking about it. She joined GHAPE in 2004 and has received and repaid Empowerment credit four times.

She plans to invest in her dressmaking and groundnut selling business. She is very sure this business will succeed because she has a good experience in it, and because there is a high demand for groundnut. Her loan will help the community in that it will enable her to make the cloths and groundnuts readily available for local buyers at affordable prices.

She will reinvest some of the proceeds realized from this business venture and use the rest to pay house rent, her children’s school fees and to provide medication for her family.

She prefers a GHAPE loan because of the low interest rate, because no collateral security is required, because the money is repaid in installments and also because of the training GHAPE gives its members.
