A loan of $575 helped to buy beer and soft drinks by the case, and to also buy liquor in greater volume.

Maudelina Mercedes's story

Maudelina, age 33, lives in the city of Cartagena with her husband and their two children, ages 3 and 11. Maudelina started out selling ”bolis” (frozen juice snacks) and trays of ice cubes. She also sold sweets, and in this first attempt her business grew. She has currently added soft drinks, cold drinks, and she plans on adding liquor; which leaves a better contribution margin.

Her goal is to become a distributor of these products in order to sell to other businesses in her community. However, her greatest challenge is insufficient working capital. That is the reason she requests a Kiva loan. She will use the loan to buy beer and soft drinks by the case. She will also buy liquor in greater volume.

With her new loan Maudelina plans to be successful because she will have a well-stocked business. The merchandise will turn over rapidly, which means a rapid increase in her working capital.

The dream she longs for the most is for her children to be successful. That is why she and her husband put forth effort while working every day to clear their way.
