A loan of $525 helped to buy supplies for her beauty salon.

Karina Paola's story

Karina, 24, lives in L. CiudadeL. 20 D. Julio, a neighborhood that combines formal and informal productive spaces, commercial zones, buildings, residential complexes, dwellings, supermarkets but, most importantly, it’s a place renowned throughout Colombia because one of the most important sites in the city and in Colombia is nearby: The BarranquilL. Municipal Stadium, where good soccer is played and is the home of the Junior D. BarranquilL. team and today is the venue for Sub-20 World Soccer.

Karina offers professional beauty salon services in this warm and friendly atmosphere to improve her customers’ personal and professional images. She offers such services as: repolarizations, highlighting, hair straightening, and hair coloring, among others. She started the business four years ago after training and graduating as a stylist from an academy and wanting to earn income independently and give wings to her free and enterprising spirit. Karina works 8 hours per day and, although competition is aggressive, she is able to sustain by offering a variety of quality services at fair prices. Her goal for later on is to have a salon that specializes in female beauty but her working capital is insufficient to do so.

This is the reason behind Karina’s calling upon a Kiva loan, her first financing from Fundación Mario Santo Domingo, that she’ll use to buy a hair dryer and a hair straightening iron. She will also buy supplies like shampoo, conditioner, hair massage treatments, ampoules and silicone in larger amounts in order to obtain discounts for paying cash. While Karina works to reach her dream, she keeps her business running with nine fold liquidity and a profit margin of no less than 37%.
