Estrudez's story

The “Madre Para Un Futuro Mejor” (Mother for a Better Future) communal bank meets every two weeks in 24 de Mayo Canton in Manabí Province known for its beautiful scenery, its forests, the variety of its fauna and for its kind, hard working residents who are farmers and raise livestock.

We met Ertrudes, 56, here. She’s married and has a 17-year-old son who is in his first semester at Manabí Technical University. Her husband’s a merchant.

She is a very good housewife who, in order to have her own income, is a merchant. She has a small snack bar where she sells such beverages as: soft drinks, water, energizing drinks, beer, fruit smoothies. She also makes and sells turnovers and hamburgers, among other fast food snacks. She works every day from 8am until 7pm and she tells us that she’s been in this business for 16 years and does very well. Besides, she has fun with it.

She will use this loan to buy soft drinks, energizing drinks, water, beer, bread, meat and other ingredients.

She’s been a member of the communal bank since the beginning several years ago and she likes it because she has fun with her fellow members at the meetings and because of the help she gets from the loans. Her dream is that her son becomes a great professional.
